"Why Should I Be Sad" tackles her divorce from Kevin Federline ("My friends said you would play me but I just said they're crazy"), as well as the breathless coverage of her personal life circa 2006 ("All the magazines trying anything to get things in the gossip section"). Britney had never gotten that personal in a song before, or reacted to her critics with such biting sass. It was the first Britney album to debut below no. Yet somehow, amid all this turmoil and volatility, Britney managed to release Blackout, which against all odds turned out to be excellent. The Washington Post called her "out-of-shape" and "not ready for prime time." The New York Daily News mentioned her "glassy" eyes and "ill-fitting blond weave," while The New York Times referred to the performance as a "fiasco." (There was also Chris Crocker's infamous " Leave Britney Alone" video, roundly mocked for its histrionics but genuine in its concern for Britney's well-being.) "Why was Britney so bad?" asked ABC News. Almost everyone was rooting for her to knock it out of the park at the VMAs, but instead she delivered a performance that was riveting only because it was so hard to watch. Between her 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander, her marriage to and divorce from Kevin Federline, the birth of her two sons, her multiple rehab visits, and the infamous head-shaving and umbrella attack, Britney had an extremely rough few years. This performance, billed as Britney's big "comeback" following her post- In the Zone hiatus and public breakdown, was a disaster.
